Earned Income Tax Credit -
Volunteers Make a Difference
Every
year millions of dollars in tax refunds go unclaimed
in Philadelphia. As a partner in The
Campaign for Working Families, United Way of Southeastern
Pennsylvania helps bring many of those millions
back to Philadelphia’s low-income working
families. The Campaign recruits and trains hundreds
of volunteers across the city each year. The
Campaign provides free tax assistance to families,
helping them file for the Earned Income Tax
Credit (EITC) and connects Philadelphia residents
to other tax credits, public benefits, and asset-building
resources through hundreds of local volunteers.
During the 2007-08 tax season:
- completed 13,500 tax returns
- brought $20 million in state and federal tax refunds to Philadelphia families
- Brought at least $4 million in Stimulus Payments to Philadelphians
Since 2003, the Campaign for Working Families has:
- filed 68,400 tax returns
- opened over 500 bank accounts
- brought $106 million in refunds and credits directly into the homes of low-income working families
- saved our customers an additional estimated $17 million in interest, fees and charges for tax preparation, check cashing and loans
- provided financial education to over 3,000 individuals
- trained 2,000 volunteers to provide free tax preparation
Processed 54 ITIN applications for individuals not eligible for a social security number, in collaboration with Ceiba, Philadelphia Legal Assistance, Community Legal Services, and Congreso
