Bringing Positive Change
We are bringing positive change to our community by:
- Increasing the impact of women donors
- Increasing the number of women volunteers
- Strengthening programs serving at-risk women and girls
Providing Opportunities for Women
The caring women who join our cause enjoy being part of the solution to problems facing women and girls in Southeastern Pennsylvania. They also enjoy opportunities to network with women leaders and develop their own leadership skills.
Our Successes So Far
Our signature program – Girls Today, Leaders Tomorrow – is changing the lives of at-risk adolescent girls and supporting area agencies with proven success in serving this vulnerable population. The Women’s Initiative has raised more than $1.4MM for GTLT through its annual gala dinner. Through our new WING Network, we are mentoring emerging women leaders under age 35 to nurture their philanthropic interests and build their networks with other women donors.
Our Ambitious Goals
We are actively planning for expansion in the opportunities we offer our members, including attending donor networking events and volunteering in meaningful, hands-on activities.
Girls
Today,
Leaders Tomorrow
United Way’s Women’s Initiative is devoted to supporting adolescent girls (grades 6 and 7) through public education, advocacy, volunteer mobilization, and funding to help them develop core values that will protect them from negative influences and support their success as adults. Through our Girls Today, Leaders Tomorrow efforts, UnitedWay supports community and school-based activities that focus on helping girls build self-esteem, honor their bodies and maintain healthy relationships with their peers. The Girls Today, Leaders Tomorrow program supports attitudes and behaviors related to the “six pillars of character” – trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship.

2012 United Way Women’s Initiative
Award Winner Blondell Reynolds Brown Each year, the Women's Initiative Gala recognizes a female leader who has committed her time, talent and energy to furthering the goals of United Way. The 2012 Women's Initiative Award Winner is Blondell Reynolds Brown. Councilwoman Blondell Reynolds Brown is dedicated to enriching the lives of Philadelphia residents by "Putting People First." As an educator, community activist, political leader and concerned parent, her focus and commitment to help others defined her work prior to her election to Philadelphia City Council. She has sponsored and gained passage of legislation that promotes the availability of and increases access to meaningful opportunities in small business development for women and minorities, education, arts and culture. In addition, Councilwoman Reynolds Brown is now a leader in energy conservation and environmental matters and is infusing her policy and program initiatives to reflect this new and important priority. Councilwoman Reynolds Brown often devotes her programmatic and legislative efforts toward improving the quality of life for our City's most vulnerable citizens, children. The Celebration of Moxie Women, her signature program held in March, focuses on the potential of girls, the promise of the next generation of women leaders (ages 21-39 yrs. old), and the power of accomplished and professional businesswomen, especially working mothers. Councilwoman Reynolds Brown has been recognized for her accomplishments as a Philadelphia Business Journal Woman of Distinction; as a recipient of the PA Commission for Women Women's History Month Award; and as one of 50 of Pennsylvania’s most influential women in the book, VOICES. We are delighted to honor Councilwoman Reynolds Brown, who joins past Women’s Initiative Award winners including, Charisse R. Lillie, Laurada Byers, Terry D'Alessandro, Molly D. Shepard, Lynne Korman Honickman, Carole Haas Gravagno, and Harriet Weiss. |
