Defining the Need*

Strong leadership is critical to the ability of nonprofit organizations to carry out their missions and their key roles in our society. Developing new nonprofit leaders can’t wait!

  • 640,000 new senior nonprofit managers will be needed in the next decade.
  • 75% of executive directors report that they are planning to step down in the next five years.
  • One in three executive directors is eventually fired or forced out of the job.
  • Only 29% of executive directors have discussed a succession plan with their boards of directors.
  • Finding and developing talented managers is the most common management challenge faced by nonprofits today.

Emerging Leaders Program
Course Description

This program includes a 6-week course designed to enhance the leadership skills of young nonprofit professionals. The classroom sessions provide presentations of the latest in leadership theory and practices, interactive exercises that allow participants to explore skills and discussion to share experiences and learn from fellow leaders. The format of each weekly session allows time for application and analysis of skills. The small class size allows for a strong learning community to form and maximizes participation.

Along with the class sessions, the course includes a multi-rater feedback assessment, a skills assessment, three individual coaching sessions, a leader’s discussion panel and peer networking opportunities. Participants will use the multi-rater feedback and the skills assessment to better understand their specific strengths and weaknesses in the workplace. The confidential coaching sessions provide a space for the participants to debrief their feedback report, as well as to work through specific situations where they are applying what they have learned in class. In the leadership panel, participants get to hear accomplished non-profit leaders in the region discuss their challenges and experiences. Opportunities for peer networking are provided in order for participants to better connect with each other on a personal level.

The combination of the classroom sessions, professional assessments, and the coaching sessions gives leaders the structure they need to grow in awareness of their leadership style and enhance skills that not only raise their productivity, but that of all the other employees that they lead— increasing the capacity of their organizations.

Upon graduation, participants will join a network of ELP graduates who will have the opportunity to take part in ongoing development seminars biannually and continued peer networking events.
