ADVANCING THE COMMON GOOD… HEALTH for Seniors
United Way works to advance the common good by targeting its strategies at those critical passages in life that can present opportunities for individuals and families to dramatically increase their chances for long term success. This approach maximizes United Way’s effectiveness, because it allows us to improve lives and communities not just in the short term, and not just on the surface, but in a lasting and meaningful way.

United
Way knows that Seniors are passionate about remaining in their own homes and
communities as they age. With the right supports, more seniors can achieve
this goal. By bringing more senior centers up to national standards of excellence,
United Way is helping these centers to better provide seniors with opportunities
to socialize, exercise, learn, and connect to community resources. Already,
United Way has assisted more than 80 percent of the centers in the state to
achieve this level of quality.
Results for our Community:
Tucked
back into a quiet corner of South Philadelphia, the JCCs Stiffel Senior Center
has been welcoming the neighborhood’s older citizens through their doors
for the past thirty-seven years. On most weekdays the Stiffel Center holds
classes and other activities, but on Fridays the basement cafeteria is transformed
into a Cabaret club and the Stiffel Swingers keep the beat for the sassiest
seniors in town.
“The guys and I have been playing together for years,” said Dave Welsh, saxophone player for the Stiffel Swingers. “Having a regular gig and playing to an audience that can sing and dance with the best of them keeps me feeling young.”
“It’s important to give older Philadelphians opportunities to remain active and involved in the communities in which they have lived for decades,” said Susan Hoffman, Site Director at the Stiffel Center. “We’re grateful to have the United Way as a trusted partner.”
